Hi First Graders!
Happy April Fool's Day! Did you do any silly tricks at your house? Tell them about us during morning meeting or send me a photo for our class dojo story! Here are your assignments for today: Reading: Reread “The Very Best Gift". In your journal, draw a picture of something you think would be the very best gift for you. Write a sentence or two telling why. Writing: Continue working on your Acrostic Poem We will celebrate National Poetry Month by listening to a daily read aloud of a story with poetic elements, a children's poem or a book about poetry. Today, please watch this read aloud of one of my favorite rhyming picture books, "The Circus Ship" by Chris Van Dusen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qv4C9gkkuWs The story is based on a true event, when an actual circus ship sunk off the coast of an island in Maine. Van Dusen uses rhyme and uses alliteration to enhance the story. Alliteration is the repetition of sounds in neighboring words—usually the beginning consonant sound. Enjoy! Hello everyone! In an effort to find a way to collaborate on work even though we are apart from one another, we will be experimenting with a collaborative social studies project, studying American Symbols. Students have each be assigned a national symbol to research and collect information about. They will then either write a short report about their symbol or create a short video of themselves talking about the symbol. I am adding a Gallery page on the website where we will post pictures of the reports and the videos, so we will have a collection of information about the symbols of America. This meets Massachusetts Social Studies standard 1.T3.2: "Demonstrate understanding of the ways people show pride in belonging to the United States by recognizing and explaining the meaning of unifying symbols, phrases, and songs." The project should be completed by Monday, April 6. Please see this lesson plan for details and symbol assignments:
I will be assigning videos, lessons, and resources for students to reference as part of their daily assignments. But, as a short introduction, please check out this lesson about symbols that I recorded. Good Morning!
